A while back Justin and I were going through a soul and funk collection we just bought when to my excitement we came across a yellow-labeled 45 on Mustache Records called “Back To Ypsilanti” by Lee Osler.
I live in good ol’ Ypsilanti (pronounced ip-sa-lan-tee), and have what we call “Ypsi-Pride”. It’s kind of a cool town, but a little rough around the edges. We have Eastern Michigan University, Historic Depot Town (where I live near), the famous watertower shaped like a giant you-know-what, a cool local music scene, a few good bars and restaurants, and the Huron river running straight through town. On the other hand, we have (in some areas of town) prostitution, drugs, shootings, and other such not-so-cool things. Overall, it doesn’t have the greatest reputation. Plus, it’s next to Ann Arbor, which gets all the attention and love.
Despite this, we Ypsilantians take some pride in our city. There’s something about it that has some charm, something that makes it somehow cool to live in. Which is why, to my delight, Lee Osler’s “Back To Ypsilanti” turned out to be arguably the sweetest song I had ever heard when I first put it on my turntable at full blast. It’s a upbeat dance-funk gem that hails Ypsi as the greatest city in the known universe. It has become the song that everyone who’s been to my house knows about. It is THE most prized record in my entire collection, no joke. Whenever we have people over, I always play it and everyone loves it and dances to it and sings along.
My good friend and fellow Ypsilanti native Van, who in addition to being a gym teacher and coach is also a soul and R&B singer, got to talking one day about music and I asked him if he remembered the song “Back To Ypsilanti”. It turns out that Van was good friends with Lee Osler and used to sing it with him back in the day. And Lee is alive and well and still lives on the south side.
Van went on to tell me a little history of the song. Lee was an up and coming singer in Ypsi who was associated with another R&B group around that time. He had a woman that was backing him financially and was the owner of Mustache Records, named after Lee’s fantastic curled stache.
The lyrics are all about Ypsi, mentioning Depot Town, the water tower, EMU, street names, the fun times, the pretty girls, ect. The song was a local hit and in 1983 was even declared the official song of Ypsilanti by the Ypsilanti City Council. Van estimated that around 500 copies were pressed. The B Side is called “Tarnished Love Affair”.
It’s been sort of my mission to revive this song. I have plans to interview Lee and find more info about his career, so there will be a part 2 of this blog at a later date. I will also try to post the B side.
And no, this copy is not for sale!
If you have any more info please add…Gerard mentioned that he used to drive by the Mustache Lounge bar in Dearborn and thought that the label was related to this. And I think I remember Van telling me about this but I’m not sure.
I’m going back to Ypsilanti, back to Ypsilanti, that’s where I come from!

Geoff - That song has such fantastic memories associated with it. Many good nights spent in your basement dancing and trying to tempt Zoe to sit on the couch with me (I know, I know, I’m naughty, but I LOVE that dog). Gerard and I both miss you and Jessica, and all of our other friends. Thanks for posting this very special song. I am going to play it again and dance in my cublicle right now! I love you guys.

I used to have a copy of the 45 myself. I ran across it in 1985 in the back of the old Domino’s Pizza on Holmes where I worked. I snagged it and took it home to play. Then I thought the song was cheesy. But the song has aged well and it was great to hear again after 20+ years! I wish I still had the 45. Thanks for posting the song.
I’m now living in Kansas City, but I need to get back to Ypsilanti, back to Ypsilanti to have some fun!

Thanks for dropping by….yeah, the song is cheesy, but that’s what makes it so good. I’m glad you got a kick out of it!
In Ypsilanti you can have some fun, but in Kansas City, they got those really pretty women there and I’m going to get me one! (I’m going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come)
I think a future post on this blog might be to vote on which city has the best song written about it.

A freind of mine just sent this blog to me. So sweet! I am currently asking the band I’m in to play this song the next time we play TC’s or Andrew’s in Ypsi. This is right up our alley, although there will be some slight rearrangement. Check out Jamison at http://www.jamisonband.com
Enjoy and look out for us comin’ back to Ypsilanti soon!

Rick,
First off - I checked out your site - you guys seems like a very fun and entertaining band. Your influences are exactly what I’m into, so please keep us and others posted here on what you guys are up to.
I’m so glad to see that our discovery and revival of this 45 have led to so much happening. We’re seeing that song pop up all over the place as so many people are digging it and feeling the spirit of what Lee Osler was throwing down back in 1983. To do a cover of that song and play it live in Ypsi would be so incredibly sweet. I would certainly spread the word around town if you guys happen to put that together and perform it.
Thanks so much for dropping by. Good luck with the music; I’ll be keeping up with you guys now.

Wow I am just blown away by this song. I’m from Ann Arbor born and raised. My moms now lives in Ypsi and I’m in Los Angeles. As a musician and a lover of the funk and early 80’s music this song means a lot to me. All I can say is Wow! I used to play in a local band called Funktelligence and if we would have known of this song we would have for sure learned it and played it all the time. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Halla

Joe! Yo, it’s Geoff Anderson, man. I own Cousins Vinyl along with my cousin. You and I went to Huron together - I grew up with Topher. I think we also worked together for a minute at Eberwhite. I saw Funktelligence play way back in the early days up til the last show. In fact, I still have a tape of the earliest Funktelligence material. I was going to write about you guys on this site actually. Let me know what you’re up to these days and give me a link to any band you’re playing in or projects you’re doing!
Yeah, Joe, this song blew me away too. When I found it and saw the title I was excited but then listening to it was crazy. I’d have parties at my house (I live in Ypsi now) and put it on and people would flip.
Ever since I posted the song here, there’s been a Back To Ypsilanti revival. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Joe, and keep up with the music. It was good to hear from you.

This song brings nothing but good memories. It would be a blast to have him and his band have a old school review at the festival held in the summer here in Ypsilanti. That song could and should be played on the radio today !

Here is a verse that sums up every thing in life :
“I’m a goin back to Ypsi city where the girls they are so pretty..
Down in Depot town where they use’t ta hang around, up on Cross Street… Where they use’t ta eat at Lees.”
Cool Post…..

hey dats my daddy he can sing please dont hate
I LOVE U DADDY;)

Cousin Geoff
Oh, no, I wasn’t hating. If you read my original post, you’ll see that “Back To Ypsilanti” is my favorite record in my collection. There’s nothing but love for Lee here.
The Bob Marley reference was about all the children that Bob Marley had that went on to be great singers themselves: Stephen, Ziggy, Damian, Ky-Mani among the most well known.
Now there’s been at least four of Lee’s children who have left comments here, most of whom are singers themselves. I think that’s really cool.
A true story is that when my wife was still pregnant with my own daughter, we used to play “Back To Ypsilanti” really loud and every time, without fail, she would start moving and kicking. Now she’s one, and she dances to the song every time. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t love this song when I’ve played it. Being from Ypsi, I can appreciate it even more. After I posted this song on this website, it lead to a revival of the song around town and I’ve even heard it gaining popularity outside of Michigan.
Now, I know that, despite the song’s greatness, Lee is by no means Bob Marley. But there’s something to be said about the great unknowns in the music world, and Lee was one of those. That’s what record collecting is all about. Who’s to say that with a lucky break here or there, Lee couldn’t have hit it big? He certainly had the talent and the band that backed him up produced an absolute classic modern funk sound that was IT back in 1983.
Thanks for stopping by Tyra Lee…If you see your dad, tell him that we’re interested in other music he may have done and to leave a comment here one day.

I’m Billy Wilson the president of the Motown Alumni Association (MotownAlumni.com), I’m also the Senior Talent Director for Hitsville Venture LLC. We work with artists such as The Temptations, The Four Tops, George Clinton, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Freda Payne and many other major artists. I was very, very surprised to here this recording, because I was the bass player on the recording! I don’t remember but I think I was on the background on the end of the song also! It’s been a longtime. Lee is a very, very good friend of mine, and was my idol back in the day. So I was very, very proud to have played for him through out the years. I’ve moved on to play with major artists and perform for millions of people, but I am still an Ypsi-Gypsi. Once an Ypsi-man always a Ypsi -man!!

Interesting facts about Lee Osler … Lee was one of the lead singers of a group called the SoulMates. They were the Miracles (Motown group) of Ypsilanti. They were so popular, they they were the only group that could fill a 1,500 to 2,500 seat auditorium every show! I know … I went to all of them. Lee was the Smokey Robinson of the group, and as far as we were concerned, was better than Smokey! I remember once going to see the Soulmates at Ypsilanti High School, and got there to late and had to take the nose bleed seats way in the back. My friends and I were really excited … nose bleed seats or not! When Lee started to sing … the girls ran up to the stage, and stasrted to pull on his clothes. I thought to myself …”I want to be just like him”, and I wanted to play behind him as a Bass player! A few years later I gotthat chance, and I was thrilled. About a year or so of playing with him, I finally got to tell him what started my career … I told him about seeing him, and the women pulling on his clothes … he said “You seen that? I was so embarassed about that … ” I said are you crazy … women pulling on your clothes, adoring you to that degree … I would have killed for that” He said “Yeah, I would have killed to … those where my sisters messing around … they embarassed me!” I said ….HUH???!?!?!
LOL … FUNNY AS HECK NOW!!LOL

That bass was great on Back to Ypsilanti - and I’m assuming you were the vocals near the end, “going back to Ypsi…”. I’d love to hear “One God” - was it pressed on 45? Did Lee record anything else? I haven’t found anything else or heard of anything else, and Back to Ypsilanti copies don’t surface very often, although I have two copies in my personal collection. If you have any extra copies of anything and would like to have it posted on the site, let me know.
One more thing to add while I’m visiting this thread again…we had an event at the Corner Brewery in Ypsi and the DJ was spinning some old stuff. I walked up and gave him Back to Ypsilanti to put on and the place went crazy - people clapping and up and dancing. It’s amazing how uplifting the song is. The DJ was blown away and asked if it was for sale, and I said no but told him about it. I always tell people it is the greatest song ever recorded and in a way it is. Even my 18 month old daughter dances like crazy when I put it on.
Thanks again for dropping by with the great Lee Osler info. It’s important to preserve that history and we all appreciate your contribution.
