I have never been a fan of American Idol, but the producers of that abomination have come up with the TV show ”The Next Great American Band”. One of the 12 finalists in this show is my favorite local Detroit band, The Muggs. Here is an earlier post Cousin Geoff wrote about buying some cd’s from them. I suggest everybody who reads this blog to vote for the Muggs as much as they can. If you go to FOX.com you can check out previously ran episodes. Here is the link to their bio on fox along with a video.

Voting for The Muggs was the first time that I have ever voted on a reality show. I was pleased that their TV performance was very Muggs- not sugared up for a pop audience. Hopefully we will be able to watch them compete for atleast a few more weeks.

I watched the show for the first time last night. I thought the Muggs did OK - but I agreed with the judges about his voice. When he was singing, I thought - what the hell is up with that? On the CD, his voice sounds really good, but live I thought it was a little nasily and weak. But he showed why he’s one of the best rock guitarists in Michigan right now.
I really liked the interview with them and him explaining the name of the band - it was so typical metro Detroit. Calling people and everything mugs - it’s like something we used to do in high school - and even now.
It would be sweet if they won but I was still disapointed in his voice - I guess studio production can do wonders cause I thought his vocals were a strength on the CD…maybe I’ll try to post the audio if I can find it…
Still though, they’re the best band on the show. They’ll bounce back - he’ll wail it out next time….GO MUGGS!

Oh, I saw that show!
No, no, the problem was the terrible sound—the vocals were mixed poorly for nearly everyone, especially the Muggs. Amy and I kept talking about that—it’s similar to seeing a band you like perform on Saturday Night Live, both due to way weird acoustics that make the voices all seem really flat. What would help would be a little artificial reverb added.

I have to agree with Josh in that his vocals are fine when you see them live. While his voice is not the best it seems a lot worse than it should be on the show
