This just occurred to me as I was looking at the labels of a few random records.

Here’s the first one: I’m going to write this out as it appears on the label.

Slow Train Coming

by Bob Dylan

Gotta serve somebody

Precious angel

I believe in you

Slow train

Gonna change my way of thinking

Do right to me baby

When you gonna wake up

Man gave names to all the animals

When he returns

——————————-

Get it? I’m just writing down the song titles as they appear in order on the label. Side 1 is verse 1, Side 2 verse 2. I’m sure this has been discovered before but before I google it I’ll just post this. The poetry works in a sort of an extended Japanese style of capturing a moment using simple words and phrases with few lines.

Maybe this only works because it’s Bob Dylan? Let’s try some more, at random. How about Booker T and the MG’s, Melting Pot?

I’m at the shop now. Here are some more. It’s amazing how this works, and how the language of sequential songs on an album translates into poetry. There’s a lot of common themes throughout, and combined with the rhythm of the lines and the structure, it becomes it’s own genre, shaping itself under it’s own strict discipline. And there’s emotion, because the words are describing actual songs. The best part of it is, the poems write themselves because they’re already there. Check these out:
