This has to be one of the craziest songs I’ve ever come across. It’s called, “Our Lords Space Ship” by Robert White and the Candy Mt. Boys. It’s out of Clio, Michigan on the Ranger label. I collect local gospel grass stuff like Ypsilanti’s Pathway label which I written about several times on the site. I actually have quite a collection now, but this one by far blows everything else out of the water.

“Our Lords Spaceship” is completely original, written by Robert White himself. And it’s really a song about being ready, including having the house in order, for when the Lord comes down in a space ship to take people away. White sings about his dreams of a golden city where people live forever in a great big reunion, while God sits upon a thrown, apparently when he’s not driving his spaceship. I mean, how could it possibly get any better than that?

If I was really dreaming up the perfect possible combination of awesomeness, I guess the title of the LP could have been “Our Lords Space Ship”, instead of “In The Saviours Hands” and the cover could have featured a hand drawn depiction of God’s Space Ship with Robert and the Candy Mt. Boys inside. Also, laser sounds and crude space ship engine noises at the end of the song would have been a nice touch. But hey, I’ll take it.

The beauty of this is that it’s not a joke. This is a sober, serious album, and actually a pretty good one musically for how these local ones go. There’s also a song called “Gods Tax Plan” which comes across as sort of a sales pitch to be a Christian because God has no taxes. Totally sold me. They also do a good version of “Working On A Building”.

I hope you enjoy the song as much as I do. I’m hoping that someone out there will be inspired to do a cover of this, as “Our Lords Space Ship” screams for a modern take. I was imagining an electronic version by cutting a loop of the refrain and then going from there, with sounds of the space ship journey as it flies to the golden city. But anything else would work really well. If someone decides to do a cover of this, please let me know.
